Coffee meets Alcohol (“we”, “us”, or “our”) operates the Coffee meets Alcohol mobile application and this website at coffeemeetsalcohol.com. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

1. Information we collect

When you use the app, we may collect:

  • Account information — email address and authentication identifiers when you sign in with Apple or Google through our authentication provider (Supabase Auth).
  • Profile information — display name and taste preferences you choose during onboarding or in Settings.
  • Tasting, brew, and collection records — product details (brand, origin, style, ratings, notes), brew recipes and timers, gear inventory, drink collection items, timestamps, and related metadata you save in the app. You may also log drinks beyond coffee and alcohol (for example tea or soft drinks) when the app supports those types.
  • Venues and places — cafés, bars, and other places you save or mark (want to visit, visited, or dropped), including names, notes, tags, photos, map links, Google Place identifiers, and coordinates when available. We may also show curated recommended venues from our catalogue.
  • Photos — images you capture or select for label scans, tasting records, brew logs, gear, venues, and share cards.
  • Optional location — if you grant location permission, we may use your approximate or precise location when you choose to attach a place to a scan or brew, find nearby places, or show your position on the map. We do not continuously track your location in the background.
  • Subscription status — purchase and entitlement information processed by Apple App Store, Google Play, and RevenueCat (we do not receive your full payment card details).
  • Device permissions — the app may request access to your camera, photo library, and location so you can scan labels, attach photos, save share cards, and use place features.
  • Usage analytics — when you use the app, we collect product analytics through Google Firebase Analytics. This includes which screens you open, which features you use (for example scan, save, share, or open a place), general device and app information (such as app version and platform), and an analytics identifier. If you are signed in, we may associate analytics with your account user ID to understand usage across sessions. We do not use analytics to read the content of your tasting notes, photos, or ratings.

2. How we use information

We use your information to:

  • Provide core app features (scanning, saving, maps, venues, collection, gear, sharing, and displaying your records).
  • Authenticate your account and sync your data across sessions.
  • Process optional premium subscriptions and restore purchases.
  • Extract structured label data and optional product enrichment using AI when you scan a product or use Pro lookup features.
  • Geocode product origins and resolve place search results so maps and venue features work.
  • Understand how the app is used so we can improve features, reliability, and support.
  • Improve security and provide customer support.

3. AI and enrichment features

When you scan a label, photos you submit are sent to our backend and processed with Google Gemini to extract product details (for example brand, origin, and tasting notes). Enrichment may also use web search to supplement label information.

Optional Pro features may send product or bottle details to our backend for background product introductions and market-price lookups, which also use Google Gemini and related search tooling. Do not submit images or text containing sensitive personal information unrelated to the product or place you intend to log.

Google’s handling of data sent to its APIs is governed by Google’s terms and privacy policies. We use Gemini on Google’s paid tier where configured so prompts are not used to train Google’s models.

4. How we store and share information

  • Supabase — hosts authentication, database records, file storage (including label, gear, and venue photos), and server-side functions. Data is stored in cloud infrastructure operated by Supabase.
  • RevenueCat — manages in-app subscription entitlements.
  • Apple / Google — process sign-in and in-app purchases under their respective privacy policies.
  • Google Places API — we may send place search queries and place identifiers to look up café and bar details when you search for or link a venue. We do not intentionally send your tasting notes or photos to Google Places.
  • OpenStreetMap Nominatim — we may send product origin text (region and country names) or reverse-geocode coordinates from optional location use to obtain map-friendly place names. We do not send your account identifiers to this service.
  • Map providers — the in-app map may use Apple Maps or Google Maps display components depending on your device. Opening directions may launch the native maps app on your device.
  • Google Firebase Analytics — receives usage events and screen-view data from the app to help us understand feature adoption and app performance. Google’s processing is governed by Google’s Privacy Policy. You can limit ad-related uses of analytics data in your device settings where available (for example, “Limit Ad Tracking” on iOS or “Opt out of Ads Personalization” on Android).
  • System share sheet / photo library — when you share or save a tasting or brew card, the image is handled by your device operating system and any apps you choose. We do not upload share cards to other users unless you share them yourself.

Photos and records you upload are stored in cloud storage associated with your account. We do not sell your personal information.

5. Data retention and deletion

We retain your data while your account is active. You can delete individual tasting, brew, gear, or venue records in the app. You can delete your entire account from Settings; this removes your profile, records, and associated stored photos from our systems (including label, gear, and venue photos where stored for your account), subject to reasonable backup and legal retention requirements. App Store or Google Play subscriptions are managed separately in your store account.

6. Your choices

  • You may use the app without granting camera or location access, but label scanning requires photos, and place-attach / nearby features require location when you choose to use them.
  • You may sign out at any time from Settings.
  • You may manage or cancel subscriptions through Apple or Google account settings.
  • You may contact us to request access, correction, or deletion of your data.
  • You may disable analytics collection in the app by setting EXPO_PUBLIC_ANALYTICS_ENABLED=false before building, or contact us if you need help opting out of analytics on an installed build.

7. Children

The app references alcoholic beverages for personal tasting records and is intended for adults. It is not directed at children under 13 (or the applicable age in your region), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

8. Security

We use industry-standard measures including encrypted transport (HTTPS) and access controls on our backend. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; please use a strong sign-in method and keep your device updated.

9. International users

Your information may be processed in countries where our service providers operate, including the United States and other regions where Supabase, Google, Apple, Google Play, and RevenueCat maintain infrastructure. Firebase Analytics and Places data may be processed in countries where Google operates its services.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will revise the effective date above when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
